If I held you closely - A poem about children and time

I started writing this little poem in 2005 shortly after our first son was born, it was shorter then and no more than thirty words. It was packed away, unfinished and forgotten about until after we moved and my daughter was born.  After watching our first born out grow those sweet toddler days and with the experience of having another newborn  in the house I was dealing with postpartum depression & was on an emotional rollercoaster - I found the words to complete this piece

If I held you closely

and never fell asleep

Would time pass slower?

Would you never get older?

Yesterday I held you,

& you looked up at me.

My mind flashed back a year ago

when you had just turned three...

Then back a little farther,

to before you learned to smile...

To sleepless nights and lullabys

through every moment and little while.

I can't wait to see you smile

Can't wait for you to walk and play.

I can't wait to hear you talking --

Oh, the silly things you'll say.

Every day you're growing

Now you're doing all that and more.

I can't believe how big you are,

for being only four.

Perhaps some day you'll find this,

when I'm around no more

and travel back through memories

to the day when you had just turned four.

If I could hold you closely,

And never fall asleep.

Will time pass a little slower?

Will we never get any older?

It seems, the older I get the faster time goes by, what are your thoughts on that? - Like or leave your comment - let me know you were here.

Thanks for reading!!
